About The Forum Events
The Forum holds events across the year where keynote speakers are invited to give a talk on a topic of interest to the membership and a second speaker from the sector provides a response. After the talk there is an opportunity to network with other members and our sponsors.
8 June 2017 13.30 for 14.00
Summer Symposium & Forum Meeting
The symposium will take place at UBS' new offices: 5 Broadgate Place, London, EC2M 2AN. Registration is from 13.30. Formal proceedings commence at 14.00 and will be followed by a drinks reception from 17.10 until 18.30.
Being an effective Honorary Treasurer is not only about understanding the right things to do, it is also knowing how to avoid the pitfalls. The Summer Symposium is focusing on a number of topics which we hope will help improve adeptness. We will hear from eminent speakers and have the opportunity to learn from each other:
- Does the Charity Commission's financial guidance for trustees provide adequate support for all Honorary Treasurers? Focusing on the 15 questions checklist, our panel will be considering whether the guidance is challenging enough and meets the needs of both large and small charities. The panel will be chaired by Denise Fellows and includes: Gillian McKay - Head of Charities at ICAEW, Mark Salway - Director of Social Finance at Cass CCE, Pauline Broomhead - founding CEO at the Foundation for Social Improvement (FSI) and Nick Mott - Deputy Head of Guidance and Practice at the Charity Commission.
- Reporting on impact. Recent changes in SORP recommend that within the annual report social impact is presented alongside financial accounts. Jim Clifford - Head of Advisory and Impact teams at BWB will be exploring the ways in which some charities are rising to this challenge.
- Update on social investment. The ‘Get Informed’ campaign was launched at our last summer symposium. Geetha Rabrindrakumar will be reporting on its progress one year on.
- Trading as a charity - opportunity or pitfall?. Professor Paul Palmer, Graham Spooner and Stephen Brooker will engage attendees with real llife case studies to explore some of the hazards and opportunities posing the questions: When is a simple fundraiser a potentially illegal trading activity? How can I rein in those people in Marketing? We're not a hedge fund, or a commercial organisation... surely we can't do that?
